Gary Benfield New Release Brochure

The UK has a long tradition of animals in art, from Landseer’s Monarch of the Glen to the equestrian paintings of Stubbs and Munnings. Gary is their natural successor and his celebrated paintings have brought this time honoured genre back to the forefront of the public mind. Living and working in a beautiful part of Ireland, he has a close relationship with the surrounding countryside and the natural world, and much of his work has grown out of great love and respect for the animal kingdom in its many guises. He always works initially from life, and this is the key to his creative process. With him a painting does not begin and end on a canvas in his studio, but originates in extensive sketching and photographing of the subject. He then uses a combination of oils, pastels and other drawing materials to create something vibrant and spontaneous in response to the material he has built up.
