These then translate beautifully into limited editions created using dye sublimation. In this extraordinary process, solid dyes are subjected to extreme heat, causing them to vaporise and permeate the glossy surface of a thin piece of aluminium before they return to solid form. Because the colour infuses the metal, this sophisticated technique gives superbly vibrant colours and a lustrous finish. The level of detail in these images creates a sense of intimacy and closeness to these awe inspiring creatures. The depth of colour and texture as well as the extreme accuracy of the likeness is achieved through a complex technique in which Colin uses airbrush, spray can and etching tools to build the artworks in intaglio (relief) directly onto aluminium.
