Our own Mackenzie was reminded of this fascinating snippet of family history recently when he heard Feed the Birds, one of the Sherman Brothers’ most beautiful and best loved songs, which was of course written for Mary Poppins. The song chimes with Mackenzie’s own philosophy of life – an awareness of the small things which can become big things when we feed them and allow them to grow. Feed the Birds is a particularly personal subject for Mackenzie, as it was inspired by memories of his grandfather, an earlier Mackenzie Thorpe and a Lancashire poacher turned naturalist.
