Jen has also painted portraits from life ranging from four Royal portraits to the cast of ‘Coronation Street’ as part of the show’s 50th birthday celebrations. Jen counts rock icons, TV stars and celebrities among her many collectors. While Jen is highly acclaimed for her celebrated iconic portraits, these particular works represent somethingof adeparture forher. Theseare the images that Jen creates in her studio downtime as, she says, a “cathartic release”. Jen listens to music and many of the paintings are a response to a particular album or song she was playing at the time. The famous faces and strong n a r r a t i v e c o n t e n t have been replaced by a completely d i f f e r e n t abstract approach, yet somehow the work is curiously familiar. The intense palette and the sheer visual impact are typical of Jen’s existing oeuvre; bold sweeps of colour introduce a sense of compressed energy and intensity of atmosphere seeps out of every brushstroke.
