K A T H A R I N E D O V E T H E B L O S S O M I N G S U C C E S S O F A R T I S T F E A T U R E From the Regency crescents of Cheltenham and Bath to the Renaissance palazzi of Venice, Katharine’s exquisite paintings are inspired by the streetscapes, architecture, nature and atmosphere of Britain and beyond. Her new collection explores the idea of nature and the built environment existing side by side in perfect harmony. Like many of us, she has a particular fondness for springtime, and she is inspired afresh each year when the greys and browns of the city are engulfed in a riot of pink and white blossom. These beautiful images have a touch of fantasy to them – one feels a door may open to reveal Mary Poppins on her way out for a brisk walk – yet they are highly recognisable portrayals of an England we know well. Katharine always carries a camera and a notebook with her on her travels, and the images she captures on film or in sketches form the basis of her work. She says: “I am inspired by my surroundings as the light and shadows shift and change with the passing of the seasons.” Katharine is at her happiest when she is working on a new piece, experimenting with different ways to create innovative and interesting effects that will render her subject recognisable, but leave space for the imagination. Over the years she has explored an unusual array of media - paints, oil based marbling inks and even collage materials such as sailing charts - to create exquisite hues, delicate details, and on occasion great drama. After a series of successful exhibitions she is firmly established as a successful British artist with an exciting international future. 37 ARTIST FEATURE KATHARINE DOVE
