While Mark built an enviable reputation for his opulent portraits of reclining female figures in his early career, in recent years, he has ventured out of his studio, first to paint his models on city streets walking and talking, dancing and romancing, and later to place them in society settings where their lavish couture would appear to advantage. Mark’s latest works however represent something of a departure for him. Days at the races sketching and photographing his models set him thinking about figures and movement of a different kind and he turned his attention to the track. The grace, elegance and physical power of the racehorses struck a chord and he began to build up a portfolio of photographs and sketches, first bringing them into his figurative society scenes an then making the horses the subjects.
