Colin Banks A passion for wildlife

Colin Banks is a dedicated artist and conservationist, and his love of exotic wildlife in particular is powerfully expressed in these two new portraits. The level of detail he achieves creates a sense of intimacy and closeness to these awe-inspiring creatures, and the power of the subject matter combined with the technical panache of his compositional process makes them uniquely arresting. The depth of colour and texture as well as the extreme accuracy of the likeness is achieved through a complex technique in which Banks uses airbrush, spray can and etching tools to build the artworks in intaglio (relief) directly onto aluminium. These then translate beautifully into limited editions created using dye sublimation - a sophisticated technique which gives superbly vibrant colours and a lustrous finish.
